The effects of stress and anxiety can seem to be crippling at times. There are mornings where we wake up and just can’t seem to find the energy to get out of bed. Days where we dread going into the office. And nights where we toss and turn in bed trying to find sleep amongst the jumbled worries and concerns that flash through our mind. Eventually we can lose our desire to do anything. This is when we need effective self help motivation strategies.

Motivation. The drive or need to accomplish a goal. It is motivation that gets us through the ups and downs in life. We are motivated to do well for ourselves and our families. To be a good spouse. To be a good parent. To be a productive member of society. A healthy individual is motivated to accomplish all these things.
It is when stress and anxiety begin to weigh us down that we find ourselves losing motivation. When we just start to not care anymore. This when we need to seek out help to recover that sense of motivation that can push us through the downturns in our life. It’s often hard to do alone, but there are some tips that can help.
Establish clear short-term goals
Develop some short term milestones that you can focus on. Whether it be to get up an hour earlier each day to exercise, spend one night a week alone with your spouse, or even to save X number of dollars each week, these quick wins can boost your confidence and motivation levels. Long term goals are important, but short term goals will fuel the energy you need to accomplish your long term strategies.
Accept your present situation
This doesn’t mean you give up, it just means that you acknowledge your current circumstances. Don’t ignore the bill collectors calling. Don’t put off scheduling that physical. And don’t ignore the friction that might be developing at home. Accepting the issues is the first step to taking action to resolve them. Don’t hide.
Have some fun
Whatever your goals, try to inject some fun into the quest. Make it entertaining. Yes, you’re going to be working hard to get out of the rut, but it doesn’t mean you can’t try and smile or laugh at times. Take an afternoon to watch a funny movie. Make a regular night with your spouse. Self help motivation depends on you establishing some balance between work and play in your life.
Reward yourself
As you accomplish your goals, attach some kind of reward to each one. It doesn’t have to be big and it doesn’t have to be costly. Just acknowledge that sense of accomplishment when you fight through another milestone.
