Help Me Manage My Stress

What is stress?  What are stress reduction techniques?

The medical field defines stress as the cumulative effects of external and internal physical and mental forces on our body.  But in layman’s terms, stress is what we feel when we are worried or concerned and feel powerless in our ability to change things for the better.  It’s the headaches, the insomnia, the tension, and the depression we feel when faced with situations that we struggle to deal with.

There’s stress at work. The current economic crisis has led to massive corporate layoffs, huge losses in pension and 401k funds, and an uncertain future for many industries across America.

There’s stress at home.  Unemployment is reaching historic levels.  Decimated savings and retirement accounts have left the financial future in ruins for many people.  The bills keep coming, credit card rates are skyrocketing and many wonder how long they can stay afloat.

The symptoms of stress can be seen and felt. Minor reactions include periodic rushes of nervous energy or exhaustion.  More serious symptoms include persistent chest tightness, headaches, or insomnia.  All are clear signs that our bodies cannot effectively manage the current environment.  All indicate that destructive stress-related chemical reactions are occuring inside the body.  Reactions that can lead to the eventual deterioration of critical bodily functions and systems.  This is why effective stress reduction techniques are so critical.

Stress Ages Us

Stress, in addition to often leading to disease and/or injury, is one of the leading causes of premature aging.  When we are under stress, our body produces a combination of reactionary hormones and cellular free radicals that ravage the cells of our body.  Damage at the cellular level can lead to aged and wrinkled skin, hair turning prematurely grey, and decreases in brain function efficency.

In addition, as our body’s internal systems rally to try and cope with this increase in destructive cellular activity, energy is shifted away from certain “non-essential” function such as muscle maintenance, bone tissue support, and skin tissue growth.  These are left to deteriorate while the body focuses on restoring some semblance of chemical stability.

The longer we remain in a stressful condition and the severity of the associated destructive chemical activity will both dictate how much damage we incur.  And depending on the level of damage from any given stress event, the body may or may not be able to fully recover over time.

Stress Management Is The Answer

It is key that we learn how to control the stress that our bodies endure.  Everyone deals with stress in one form or another.  Anything that causes us to feel anxious, worried, or upset can be thought of as a stress “trigger”.  It is how we deal with those triggers and the resulting body reactions that will dictate the level of resulting damage in our bodies.

Stress reduction techniques come in many forms.  There are supplements that can help the body maintain a healthy chemical balance during times of stress.  There are other supplements that actually lower our reactions to stress by supplementing healthy brain and nervous system activity.  These are the “mellowing” typees of formulas that rely on herbs and other natural substances to facilitatehealthy coping mechanisms.

Other stress reduction techniques include yoga, meditation, and binaural beats.  These are all activities and stimuli that will promote relaxation and calm.  They carry over into our everyday lives and enable us to better deal with stressful situations.

We will be reviewing many of the stress reduction techniques currently available to help you manage your stress.  If you are concerned about the levels of stress you are having to deal with, whether job or home related, the solutions we present here may help.
